On the bright side, the hacking mini-game is actually perfect. The combat is more fun because you can use guns and plasmids together but the weapon and plasmid rosters are almost identical to 1's and again, the main addition, the drill, just sucks. Reusing Rapture also denies this game the "WOW" factor that 1 and Infinite have. Yes, Infinite goes off the rails but at least it tried. ![]() Bioshock 2's story is fine enough, but it's very safe and can't hold a candle to 1 or Infinite. Exploration is solid in these games but the arrow kind of ruins it IMO. TURN OFF THE WAYPOINT ARROW, I find the exploration a lot more interesting in these games without it. The little sisters are more involved now and also require a bit of exploration. Most levels feel fairly open and have secrets everywhere. Complaints aside, this probably is the best Bioshock game from a gameplay perspective. Fontaine Futuristics is particularly excellent, probably my favorite level in the whole series, and is the only level that utilizes the underwater mechanics in a meaningful way. The levels are all great and nothing is reused from B1 but they mostly look and play like more B1 until the last third or so, when the levels become more interesting. Bioshock 2 also doesn't fully take flight until the last third or so. Sorry to ramble about this, but this game really could have been something special if they leaned into the underwater elements but as it stands, it just feels like DLC for the first game. Consider playing Soma for the true deep sea experience. This game should have gone full Jules Verne, exploring sunken ships, fighting a giant octopus, etc. These sections would have been great for the drill, and you get a spear gun later that also could work fine underwater. As is, the underwater sections are just short vignettes, no different than walking through clear pipes in the first game, and there aren't even very many of these parts, maybe 5 in total? There's also no combat underwater, which is an obvious miss. ![]() You walk through a room or two, see some cool sights, and you're back inside. ![]() The underwater sections, on the other hand, are very cool but have so much missed potential. It just doesn't work and I've ignored it both times I've played B2. The drill just sucks: you need to get close, it has limited ammo, and every weapon can melee now, so why would you switch to the drill. Unfortunately, this doesn't shake things up enough up at all, only adding the drill and underwater sections. It's still set in Rapture and the gameplay is mostly unchanged but the hook is that you play as a Big Daddy. 80% PlayStation 4Bioshock 2 is a competently made game but is definitely just more Bioshock 1.
